Hemisphere Freight Services UK & Bennet USA Move 60 ton Aerospace Autoclave from UK to Thailand

Hemisphere Freight Services were very pleased to work with Bennett International Transport to organize this break bulk shipment on behalf of their client.

When Bennett contacted us in the very beginning at the quotation stage, this seemed like a straight forward shipment. But as is often the case with project cargo there is no such thing.

Cargo: Large scale industrial Autoclave used to cure and finish, manufactured parts for commercial aircraft.

Cargo Statistics: 10mtrs long x 4.6mtrs wide x 4.3mtrs high, and 60,000kgs

Route / Service: Factory relocation from UK site to Laem Chabang, Thailand, including abnormal UK road transport, port handling & lashing into the hold of a container vessel as break bulk cargo, with urgent deadlines and difficult access.

After receiving the quotation, the client had many factors to consider for this shipment. As this was relocation from their existing UK facility to a new facility, Laem Chabang, Thailand. However, it was not until the building surrounding the Autoclave had already been broken down that, the client finally gave Bennett & Hemisphere confirmation to proceed.

This meant that we had a very tight timescale in which to secure the necessary road transport & permits and finalize the matching ocean vessel, so that the Autoclave could be removed from the UK site on time.

After attending a meeting at the UK site with the shipper, our project manager was able to gain a greater understanding of the complexities of the factory removal operation and the road transport issues. Not only was the immediate site access severely restricted, but also the access road from the industrial area was undergoing extensive alterations, which if completed, would have caused major problems for the transport route for such a wide piece.

Hemisphere’s project managers worked quickly to contract the necessary trucking services/permits, arrange the sea freight vessel booking for this piece as break bulk in a protected underdeck stow position, and all details were finalized within a little over one week.

With all arrangements in place, our project manager attended the loading from factory and port operations during the weekend and evenings - necessary due to the size of the cargo & transport permits from the authorities.

During the operation, the crane that was subcontracted directly by the shipper to lift from the factory to our truck, then suffered a breakdown. Fortunately, Hemisphere was able to work with trucking contractor and the receiving port to ensure flexibility and allow the crane to be repaired and continue the lift. Therefore, we avoided the need to postpone the operation for another week and, avoided additional costs for the client.

Our project manager travelled with the cargo to the port and met with the carrier-appointed surveyor to discuss the appropriate lifting & securing of the cargo. We stayed in attendance until the Autoclave was safely stowed & secured on board the vessel. Another successful co-operation with our trusted WCA Projects partner Bennett International Transport.
