Global Shipping Services Houston Uses Barge and Part Charter Vessel for Urgent Offshore Cargo to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Life is returning to normal in the USA. Global Shipping Services (GSS), Houston has been open every single day, and our team has been in the office every day, working to support our customers and agent partners. Not a day has gone by where we did not open the office due to Covid.

This last week we have been very active loading barges and trucks for our customers.

This particular unit is 10m high: actually 5m x 4m x 10m and 84 MT, so we transported the cargo by truck to the barge landing site and loaded it to the barge, as we obviously could not truck to the port due to the height.  This cargo was urgently required for an offshore project in Brazil, and an ETA on June 15 was essential. By meeting the vessel BBC Destiny, our ETA Rio was May 13.

Since we could not meet the vessel in Houston due to the vessel schedule, we were very fortunate that the vessel was also calling Port Fourchon, Louisiana, near New Orleans. This allowed us a few days extra to arrange the transport by barge to meet the vessel in Fourchon.

The weather was tricky as we had massive storms, heavy rain, flooding, wind, and lightning in the area. But on the day of the load-out, the rain held off, and we were able to complete the loading, lashing, and securing the same day, with no weather delays.

Tug "Sea Wolf" and barge "CBC 630" were on site 0600hrs for loading.

We used TEREX HC 230 crawler for the barge loading.

The gate to the loading area was 4.06cm wide, and the cargo was 4m wide, so it was a very tight fit.

The total shipment was:

  •          7 pcs, 145mt, 782.8 cbm.
  •          1 pc via barge
  •          6 pcs by road

The Barge loading went smoothly, and we were secured and ready to move off the same day.

Loading to the vessel BBC Destiny, using ship's gear.

The vessel loading was tricky. In the days leading up to the loading, parts of Texas and Louisiana received 21" of rain in 24hrs. That's an incredible 61CM of rain, resulting in massive flooding.

I was in constant contact with the tug captain and vessel port captain, and we were fortunate that the weather took a break, allowing us to load on time with no delays due to weather.

As with all "critical/urgent" shipments, it always comes down to who you award your business to. We have always decided to be a premium forwarder, so we do not simply choose the lowest bidder - we choose reliability, service, and the confidence to get the job done on time, on budget every time.

This job went over 6 1/2 days, and I was constantly updated and informed on the tug/barge location every 4 hours, and vessel updates came regularly. And both operations merged seamlessly for a successful loading.

Even the vessel port captain was excellent throughout the storm cycle. He was confident of loading on time and understood and appreciated the costs of the barge and tugs on-site alongside the vessel. That's a first!

Our customer was delighted with our arrangements under challenging circumstances to meet their urgent ETA requirement. Another job well done by our team!
